Best you'll do in 5e: that I can think of off the top of my head.. Baseline NOT armored max AC: AC 16 (AC 10 +6 Dex modifier), add +2 Bracers of Defense, Cloak of Protection, 2x Staff's of Defense with dual wielder feat, Ring of Protection. Cloak of protection grants +1 AC without such a stipulation so it would stack with plate armor. As for helms and plate at this point there are no rules regarding substituting one part for another so it will be DM's call whether you can take off the helm from a suit of plate +3 and replace it with a Helm of Teleportation for example. Basically the title. If a mage is wearing only the cloak of protection and casts mage armor, does the cloaks +1 AC apply or no? Mage armor states: You touch a willing creature that isn’t wearing armor, and a protective magical force surrounds it until the spell ends. The targets base AC becomes 13+ it’s dexterity modifier. My first D&D game was Neverwinter Nights (the old multiplayer one on AOL), and it allowed magical armor to stack with "of protection" equipment. I got very accustomed to having an AC of -10 on my Ranger/Mage using a combination of Plate Mail+3, Ring+2, Cloak of Displacement, Shield+3 (and 18 Dexterity).
